CRAFT Riitta Sinkkonen Davies
Riitta was born in Finland where she was first introduced to weaving by her grandmother.
She went on to study for a BA in Design and woven textiles at Turku College of Arts and Design before moving to Britain in 1974 after meeting her welsh husband.
Riitta’s unique work is a reflection of her Finnish past and her love of the beautiful landscape of Pembrokeshire, her adopted home.
Her colours echo seasonal changes in landscape and light. She loves to explore traditional techniques to create contemporary textiles, both functional and decorative. Linen is her speciality but she also uses other fibres like silk, wool, cotton, viscose and paper. She dyes the yarns especially for each piece and often the dyes are painted on the warp before weaving.

In addition to many private commissions, Riitta has been involved in creating historic fabrics for a number of museums including the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, the Shakespeare Birth-Place Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon and the national trust’s Sutton Hoo Visitor Centre in Suffolk.
In 2003 she was also commissioned to weave the fine linen fabric used to make the rochet worn by Rowan Williams during his ordination as Archbishop of Canterbury.
In 2000 Riitta was a recipient of the Theo Moorman Trust Award.
